If you’re considering facelift surgery, you may realize that this procedure is designed to address sagging skin and deep creases. However, if you also experience other common signs of facial aging, such as fine lines and volume loss, a facelift alone typically cannot effectively improve these concerns. As an extensively trained plastic surgeon, Dr. Charles Perry may recommend adding facial fat grafting to a facelift to help achieve more comprehensive aesthetic enhancement. Facial fat grafting, also called fat transfer and fat injections, utilizes autologous (meaning “from your own body”) fatty tissue to plump and smooth the skin of your face. Basically, you can use unwanted excess fat from one area of your body to improve the appearance of another part of your body.
Liposuction is used to harvest the fat from one region of the body such as the thighs, hips, buttocks, or abdomen. This tissue is then carefully and minimally processed to prepare it for use as a dermal filler. When you undergo your facelift surgery, the treated fatty tissue will be administered to the desired areas (below the skin and/or into it, as needed for volume enhancement and wrinkle reduction). While recovery following this combination approach can be longer than a facelift surgery alone, patients typically report the outcome is worth it. Plus, you get the added benefit of some body contouring (an effect of the liposuction process).
