Home/Blog / Monsplasty vs. Labiaplasty

Two of our most popular vaginal rejuvenation options are monsplasty and labiaplasty. While both surgeries aim to enhance both comfort and appearance, they are designed to target different areas and achieve distinct benefits. Dr. Perry compares these two surgeries in greater detail below.

On the one hand, monsplasty aims to address sagging, redundant skin or fatty deposits in the pubic region. These effects, which are frequently the result of childbirth or massive weight loss (MWL), can make wearing clothes or swimsuits needlessly difficult and uncomfortable. Monsplasty can combat these concerns through a meticulous lifting of the area around the vagina (introitus) in a superior direction. The excess skin, fat, and lymphatic tissue can be removed through a small horizontal incision at the superior aspect of the hair-bearing skin.

Meanwhile, labiaplasty endeavors to reshape or reduce the size of the labia minora, which are the inner lips of the vulva. Patients may seek this procedure for a variety of reasons, including discomfort during physical activities, irritation, or desire for aesthetic improvement. Many labiaplasty strategies exist; however, the most common techniques are the “trim” method (which involves the removal of redundant skin through horizontal excision) and the “wedge” method (in which a “v”-shaped excision is made).

Although these two procedures are not interchangeable, many women choose to combine labiaplasty and monsplasty to more fully rejuvenate the pubic region. A comprehensive vaginal rejuvenation procedure can involve additional strategies, as well; for instance, liposuction can be employed to address unwanted fat in the labia majora (outer lips). In addition, tummy tuck surgery frequently includes a mons lift for a more dramatic contour of the upper pubic region.
