What Is a Thoracoplasty? Skip to main content

Patients who have undergone body procedures like tummy tuck surgery, breast lift surgery, or liposuction sometimes notice loose, hanging skin. This unwanted skin can be felt and seen in swimsuits, hanging over the bra, or bulging out of a tailored shirt or blouse; no matter how it manifests, the effect can be uncomfortable and unsightly. Our patients at Chrysalis Cosmetics often desire a subsequent procedure to build a smoother, more uniform torso and flattering silhouette: a surgery known as “thoracoplasty.”

In the past, thoracoplasty was commonly used to shorten chest cavities. The technique gave doctors easier access to treating chronic lung infections (such as empyema or tuberculosis), and could require the removal of ribs or even the lung tissue itself. Today – in the era of antibiotics and intensive care units – thoracoplasty is usually utilized for excess skin removal alone, without rib resection.*

To perform a thoracoplasty, Dr. Charles Perry makes an incision that stretches from each side of the lateral chest wall. This incision has the potential to heal well, as the dermis of the back is thick and strong; that said, any resulting scarring can typically be hidden within the bra strap. From here, Dr. Perry can reduce the skin that hangs from the upper back. The procedure can be done in an outpatient setting with or without anesthesia. Moreover, patients frequently combine thoracoplasty with other body contouring options (such as Brazilian butt lift surgery, thigh lift surgery, arm lift surgery, or liposuction of additional areas).

Dr. Charles Perry has treated excess skin for over twenty years, and enjoys the relationships that he has developed with his patients. We are excited to help you form a treatment plan that meets your unique needs. Contact Chrysalis Cosmetics today!
