Home/Surgical Procedures/Body/Circumcision for the Adult Male

Circumcision involves the removal of the foreskin, the fold of skin that covers the head (glans) of the penis. In many parts of the world, circumcision is performed on newborn babies; however, the procedure can offer a number of benefits to adult males, as well.*

Our Sacramento plastic surgeon, Charles Perry, MD, has offered circumcision for adults since 1998. If you are interested in circumcision for cosmetic, cultural, or medical reasons, Dr. Perry would be happy to speak to you about the surgery during an initial consultation.

What Are the Benefits of Circumcision?

Thought to be the oldest surgical procedure known to man,* circumcision has been recognized for its numerous health advantages for approximately two millenia. Its potential benefits include:

What Does the Circumcision Procedure Entail?

Circumcision is usually a very quick procedure, typically taking less than half an hour.* Dr. Perry can perform either a partial or full circumcision depending on your needs and preferences. While general anesthesia is most commonly used, patients can be administered an alternative method, such as local anesthesia, oral sedation, or intravenous anxiolysis. The course of the surgery is often fairly simple. Dr. Perry will carefully detach the foreskin from the head of the penis and reattach it to the shaft with dissolvable sutures, which typically fall out after about two weeks.

Following your circumcision, you may notice some bruising and swelling for the first few weeks to a month; if any other phenomena, such as infection or abnormal bleeding, should arise, we encourage you to let us know immediately. Dr. Perry recommends that you avoid sexual activity for a minimum of two weeks and maximum of six weeks, though the amount of time may vary upon the precise amount of swelling. We advise you to practice safe sex once you resume sexual activity.
